Nicholas Hughes

Viola

Nicholas Hughes is a Violist from the South of England and has lived in Vienna since 2020. A graduate of Guildhall School of Music and Drama, the Royal College of Music and the Universität für Musik und Darstellende Kunst Wien, Nic is a member of the Rubik Quartet and currently studies at the Hochschule für Musik und Theater München under the tutelage of Quatuor Ebene.

As a chamber musician, Nic recently took part in Musethica/ECMA Vilnius with the Rubik Quartet, and has appeared as a guest at Northern Chords (Gateshead), Aberystwyth and New Generation (Florence) festivals with a focus on chamber reductions of larger orchestral and operatic works. He was a frequent participant in the Maiastra Chamber Music Foundation concert series (London) from 2018-2020, and played in the EUYO Ferrara Chamber Music Academy 2019. Nic has had the pleasure of playing with musicians such as Christophe Koncz, Richard Lester, Arisa Fujita, Gabrielle Lester, Simon Blendis, Avri Levitan, Akiko Ono, and members of the Chamber Orchestra of Europe.

Orchestrally, Nic has played regularly as Section Leader/Co-leader in the Wiener Kammerorchester since 2021. He was a member of the European Union Youth Orchestra from 2018-2019, and has also enjoyed playing in ensembles such as the London Symphony Orchestra, the Britten Sinfonia, the ORF Radio-Symphony Orchestra Wien, the Royal Ballet Sinfonia (London/Birmingham), and the Sommerakademie der Wiener Philharmoniker/Philharmonia Akademie Wien. Nic participated in the LSO String Experience Academy 2019-2020 (extended to 2021 due to COVID-19). He has played with conductors such as Sir Simon Rattle, Gianandrea Noseda, Manfred Honeck, Marin Alsop, Vasily Petrenko, Susanna Mälkki, Oksana Lyniv, and Bernard Haitink.

In his spare time Nic likes to travel (when it is possible!), practise Yoga, and experiment with Lino printing.
